When we think of happiness, it can seem like something which picks its moments and changes constantly as we go through our lives. However, this is not always the case, and here’s why. Observing happiness on a national and global level, there is and always has been a variation in the levels of happiness. The levels of happiness from country to country, rise and fall substantially all the time and this should not be considered a newly introduced concept. A common reason influencing these fluctuations in happiness is the prosperity of their country which one could argue can explain those changes. It is therefore important to take a look into whether or not happiness has indeed changed, and if so why is this? Moving further into this, the basic needs of the individual for sure play a vital role in a person’s happiness, but what if we look past this? It goes without saying that as a nation develops, and gets more of the needs to its citizens however it would appear that there should be a point to this in terms of prosperity and life expectancy. So if this sounds like the country you are from or currently living in, then what causes these changes to happiness? One argument could be that the rise in gender, race, or sexual equalities make a significant impact on societal happiness levels and life satisfaction also. This shows that personal priority moves away from economic and physical security to the ability of self-expression and freedom to express yourself.Once you find yourself in a position not to feel an objective for survival then expressing oneself becomes important but both are just as important as each other. For the LGBTQIAcommunity, some may consider that life has until more recently felt restrictive. Therefore it makes sense to make a shift that allows people to truly be themselves. This will in return give a great sense of satisfaction to people giving an overall boost to societal happiness. It goes without saying that just simply changing the direction you want to take, doesn’t necessarily mean that you will be able to attain it. On the other hand, research has shown that those who have a personal choice over their lives tend to live in more democratic states and by extension have higher levels of happiness than those who do not. This is because they are free spirits to do what they see fit for them.Government focusses have shifted their approach from survival to their people’s free will and choice as well changing their societal values and constructs, have strong links to happiness. Therefore it is ok to assume that we should continue to push for higher civil liberties and self-expression to enable us as humanity to enrich ourselves and everyone else’s lives around us.
