Why Home Gyms Might Be The New In Thing
People are ditching their gym memberships and trading the expenses for home gym equipment. What does this mean for the future of our gyms?
As a personal trainer, my world was turned upside-down during the first lockdown. My happy place was taken from me. Going to the gym for me was my escape, a time where I keep my head down, music on and world off. When I train I don’t need to think about anything else, in ways I see it as a form of active mediation. So to have it taken away was traumatic initially.
I began to train at home while lusting after the gym, looking for gym equipment online every day, and wondering if the triple-priced dumbbells being sold on Facebook marketplace were worth it.
As we went into the second lockdown it became apparent that I couldn’t continue to focus so heavily on the gym while it can be taken away. So instead of focusing on what I couldn’t control, I turned my focus into what I could control which is my body.
Our bodies are incredible things and we can do a lot with them without any equipment at all. I now feel fitter than I have done in years. My clients feel the same way and most have quit their gym memberships.
So is this the end to going to the gym? Are people’s happy places their own homes? We would love to know your thoughts.
Keep your eyes peeled for my next article where I will discuss how to get the most out of training at home.
