Using different essentials oil depending on your mood can be a fast, effective way to change, enhance and boost your mood. Whether you want to relax, get in the zone for work or studying, or cheer yourself up, here are 6 ideas for oils and their powerful properties.
When you want to be calm and relaxed: Lavender Oil
Lavender is perhaps the most well known essential oil and is incredibly versatile: it promotes relaxation, is calming, balancing and sedative and promotes a sense of well being. Some uses for it include aiding with anxiety, depression, insomnia and stress and some people even say it helps with mild pain.
When you want to soothe difficult emotions: Roman Camomile Oil
Roman Camomile is an ancient remedy, used by you guessed it, the Romans. It has some similar properties to Lavender, such as inciting relaxation, but it is also brilliant for alleviating painful emotions and easing frustrations. So next time you’re frustrated with life, in a bad mood or going through some difficult discussions with a loved one, take a whiff of some Roman Camomile oil for some emotional relief.
When you want to feel refreshed: Orange Oil
Orange essential oil is known for its uplifting, energising and refreshing properties. Some people have also reported that it can help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation and even help soothe stomach upsets. Having something easy and fast to turn to when you need to lift your mood can be very useful, so you could try keeping a small bottle in your pocket at work for example, and when you need a boost, such as before going into a meeting or starting a new shift, inhale the scent deeply or rub onto your pulse points.
When you need invigorating: Peppermint Oil
Not just good for your teeth! Peppermint essential oil can be brilliant for when you want to feel invigorated in mind, body and soul. It can help improve attitude, increase alertness and improve concentration, as well as helping shift coughs and colds when inhaled gently through steam, perfect for staying on top at work or during your studies. It has also been said to alleviate nausea and pain.
When you need to shake off that bad mood: Frankincense Oil
Unlike that terrible Taylor Swift song, Frankincense oil really can help you shake it off when you’re in a funk. Known to ease irritability, balance emotions, create inner peace and make way for more harmony than the aforementioned musical travesty! What’s not to love? As an anti-inflammatory some people also say it has helped them with arthritis and other inflammatory conditions.
When you need to calm your nerves: Cedarwood Oil
We all have times when we feel very nervous: a job interview, an important exam or a big event you really want to go well. The aroma of cedarwood oil can calm your nerves, soothe tension, and help you relax so you can focus on doing the best job you can. It is also thought to have antispasmodic properties – prevents muscle spasm and tight muscles – so can also help lessen the physical symptoms of nerves.
So there we have it: 6 different essential oils to help you take control of your mood, soothe different symptoms when you need it and lift you up too. So how do I use these essential oils in aromatherapy terms? Some ways to harness these powerful properties include adding a few drops to a diffuser to add scent to a room or space, massaging the oil into your pulse points (which will also make you smell nice!), or simply keep a small bottle of your preferred scent to hand and inhale the scent deeply when you need it. Happy aroma-ing!
