Throughout history, if something becomes too polluted, it was possible to simply pack up and move to a cleaner area. However, with this now being a massive global issue, It is not more widely recognised that Earth is not just a place where we need to live but our children’s children and future generations need to live too. Therefore, this issue is currently top of the agenda and we have started to learn from our mistakes about pollution.
If we keep this issue at the forefront of our minds always then we can do something about it before it is too late and we can create a sustainableplanet that will be fit for future generations to thrive. The biggest issue we face with this is that even today, we don’t fully understand its long-term effects. Scary thought, right? It is scary because we don’t fully understand what the result of throwing away non-biodegradable plastic would be in the future. We have become too comfortable with our throw-away society and we live under the illusion that the Earth has endless resources. If we were to increase production and consumption for everyone, then they will have a better life under capitalism. Having said that, the previous tactic of using as much resource as possible more than the Earth can sustain, polluting, and then trying to move on simply isn’t going to work anymore. The reasons for this are overcrowding, pollution and nowhere to expand, run away, or hide from this issue anymore, and if we constantly have this mentality and try to escape we are just enhancing the issue towards environmental catastrophe. It is far too easy to have the assumption that technological advancements will protect us but the truth is we are not even close to being able to defend ourselves. Technological advancements have often been an excuse for previous issues we have found ourselves in as humanity. We were able to eradicate disease, get more resources, and increase living thanks to technology. It will certainly help us but it won’t protect us entirely in the long run.Humanity is resilient. We can thrive once again after most crises so can we bounce back from our previous mistakes? For us to find a sustainable solution, we first need to truly understand the problems. We need to work out how we can best use science to solve this issue but we cannot do it on our own, It must be a global effort towards the same outcome. Without unity on this issue, we will not survive. If we work together and collaborate and get behind the issue collectively then we can save ourselves and repair our mistakes and this must happen now if we want our world to continue being habitable.
